Beth has all that any Women could possibly want. She has a fantastic career as the curator of a museum and has a wonderful group of friends who always stick by her. However all cannot be perfect, she has lost her faith in love itself. She finds out that her ex boyfriend is engaged, leading her to the new found thought that actually love is quite a good idea. At her Sister’s wedding in Rome she develops an affection for a man, yet sees him kissing a different women shortly after she believed they had shared magic. In a drunken state she decides to throw off her shoes and take out coins from what turns out to be a magic fountain. All of a sudden a handful of men who had thrown coins into the fountain fall in love with her. What does she do?
When In Rome is not a terrible film, however it is not that great either, it falls somewhere in the middle. It is a perfect cheesy valentine’s day Rome-antic comedy – sorry for the pun- that couples will enjoy watching together. It lacks the spark to differentiate it from those previous romantic comedies that we have all seen before. The script is relatively weak and there are no standout performances. However this is the season for love, and if you want some harmless, and thoughtless, entertainment, then this will be a good choice. There is the occasional laugh throughout and there is the good cameo we would expect from Angelica Houston. I am not recommending the film, but not saying it is one to totally avoid either. If you have nothing better to do then you won’t be disappointed, if not then wait for it to be released on DVD, you certainly won’t miss out.
