Colin Firth is up for his first Oscar for his role as a gay academic mourning the death of his partner in fashion designer Tom Ford’s debut feature film A Single Man.

The 49-year-old, who recently had a singing role in Mamma Mia!, said of his nomination: “I thought I was managing my expectations.

“But on hearing the news I discovered new and unfamiliar vocal tones. Perhaps I should do another musical.”

Newcomer Mulligan, 24, is up for best actress for her role in An Education, based on the memoirs of journalist Lynn Barber.

Previous Academy Award winner Dame Helen gets a go at a second Oscar for her performance as writer Leo Tolstoy’s wife in The Last Station.

An Education is nominated for best picture, alongside films including Avatar, The Hurt Locker, District 9, Precious, and Up In The Air.

Avatar director James Cameron is pitted against his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, whose film The Hurt Locker has won critical acclaim, in the directing category.

Made for a fraction of the budget of Avatar, The Hurt Locker, a tense movie about an elite bomb disposal team, has won widespread critical acclaim and triumphed at the Directors Guild of America awards.

Cameron and Bigelow were both shortlisted for best director in the Golden Globes, with Cameron taking the prize.

An Education and In The Loop – the movie spin-off from the BBC’s hit political comedy The Thick of It – will battle it out in the adapted screenplay section.

Avatar and The Hurt Locker are leading the nominations with nine apiece.

Avatar recently surpassed Cameron’s multiple Oscar-winning Titanic – and saw the director beat his own record when the film became the highest grossing movie yet.

For the first time the Oscar nominations feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

Acting nominees include Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Mo’Nique for Precious and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.

Comedian and film director Armando Iannucci responded to In The Loop’s nominations success by remarking on Twitter: “Bloomin heck. In The Loop nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. Bonk me purple.”

All of the Jonas Brothers take their place in the worst actor category alongside previously esteemed actors such as Eddie Murphy for Imagine That, Steve Martin for Pink Panther 2 and John Travolta for Old Dogs.
Kelly Preston, Travolta’s wife, features in the worst actress category also for Old Dogs, and she is competing against Sienna Miller for GI Joe, Julie White from Transformers, Ali Larter in Obsessed and Candice Bergen role in Bride Wars.
This year the Razzies also has a special award for the worst film of the previous decade, with 5 films nominated – Battlefield Earth, Gigl, Swept Away, Freddy Got Fingered and I Know Who Killed Me
The Razzies were created by John Wilson as the comedic awards prior to the Oscars; the awards are voted for by members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, of which anyone is eligible.

When In Rome is not a terrible film, however it is not that great either, it falls somewhere in the middle. It is a perfect cheesy valentine’s day Rome-antic comedy – sorry for the pun- that couples will enjoy watching together. It lacks the spark to differentiate it from those previous romantic comedies that we have all seen before. The script is relatively weak and there are no standout performances. However this is the season for love, and if you want some harmless, and thoughtless, entertainment, then this will be a good choice. There is the occasional laugh throughout and there is the good cameo we would expect from Angelica Houston. I am not recommending the film, but not saying it is one to totally avoid either. If you have nothing better to do then you won’t be disappointed,  if not then wait for it to be released on DVD, you certainly won’t miss out.

Overall I give it 6/10.

Tennant certainly has what it takes – good looks, great actor and an English accent they’ll love in the States. He also has the new series ‘Rex is Not Your Lawyer’ on NBC. If it becomes successful, he plans to move to Los Angeles.

 “It seems British actors are more and more in vogue over there – look at Hugh Laurie,” he said. “He’s just about as big a star as you get in the States and he’s made it in a role he would never have been given here”.

“But I’m not really thinking, ‘Well, they all did it, so I’ll do it.’ There’s no great plan. You just muddle along, and if an opportunity comes up, it would be silly not to take it.”

Tennant’s new U.S. Comedy series centre’s around his character, a top lawyer who starts suffering from panic attacks and eventually coaches his clients to represent themselves in court, so he no longer has to. NBC has high hopes for the pilot, which could be given a full season if it goes down well with audiences.

Tennant was the 10th Doctor and is preparing to bow out of the Tardis in a two-part Dr Who BBC Christmas special. He will regenerate into Matt Smith, the latest actor to take on the time-travelling sci-fi role.

 These movies were closely followed by extra-terrestrial film “District 9” with seven nominations. Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” starring Brad Pitt and “Up in the Air” with George Clooney each received six nominations, organizers said Thursday.

The BAFTAs are awarded on February 21.

 Avatar’s 3-D effects have wowed critics and fans and helped it earn $1.6 billion at global box offices, claimed best film, cinematography, editing, music, production design, sound and special visual effects. “Titanic” also directed by Cameron is the world’s highest-grossing film.

 “Coco Before Chanel,” “Nowhere Boy,” “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire” and animated film “Up” also received four nominations each.

District 9, director Neill Blomkamp’s tale about extraterrestrials forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth, won Blomkamp a director nomination and others for cinematography, adapted screenplay, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects.

 Avatar led nominations for best film, followed by British film An Education, The Hurt Locker, Precious and Up in the Air.

Cameron and Blomkamp will contend for a director BAFTA award with “Pulp Fiction” filmmaker Tarantino, Lone Scherfig (An Education), and Kathryn Bigelow, whose The Hurt Locker also counts nominations for best film and leading actor.

 Nominations for leading actor pitted Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney for his role as the lovelorn business traveller in Up in the Air against Jeff Bridges as the broken-down, country music singer in “Crazy Heart,” Colin Firth in “A Single Man,” Jeremy Renner’s portrayal of SSgt. William James in The Hurt Locker and Andy Serkis as Punk rocker Ian Dury in “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.”

Meryl Streep was the biggest Hollywood name nominated for leading actress, followed by “Amelie” actress Audrey Tautou for her portrayal of the fashion doyenne Coco Chanel before she created her atelier.

 Carey Mulligan was nominated for An Education and Saoirse Ronan for director Peter Jackson’s screen adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel “The Lovely Bones.” 

The BAFTA nominations come as the awards season gets into full swing, although they are an unreliable guide to the movie world’s biggest prize, the Academy Awards.
