What a turnaround from the last time these two met. Arsenal’s 2-1 win at Anfield in December moved the Gunners to within six points of leaders Chelsea with a game in hand. Liverpool, on the other hand, were seventh, five points adrift of fourth. Now, two months on, their seasons are going in opposite directions. The Gunners are winless in four and nine points off the pace after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, while Liverpool have moved seamlessly into fourth place courtesy of a seven-match unbeaten league run.

England manager Fabio Capello took a matter of minutes on Friday to tell Terry his time as captain of the national side was at an end following the central defender’s alleged affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-girlfriend of former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge.

But the 29-year-old Terry remains the captain of Chelsea, where he has had the unstinting backing of manager Carlo Ancelotti, and the ongoing publicity over his private life appears to have had no adverse effect on his on-field performances.

It was from Terry’s flick-on that Didier Drogba scored the first of his two goals on Sunday at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 to regain top spot in the English Premier League.

Terry, who has not so far commented publicly about his alleged infidelity, remains a hero to many Chelsea supporters and he told Chelsea TV, the club’s in-house television station, after Sunday’s victory: “On a personal note I would like to thank every single fan.

“It’s been an emotional day (Sunday) for myself and how the fans have been with me over the last two weeks has been quite incredible.

“I didn’t expect that today and I would like to thank every single individual fan for the way they treated me.

“It was a great performance and, I mean it from my heart, I would like to thank everyone.”

The move followed a meeting between Terry and England’s head coach, Fabio Capello, at FA headquarters at Wembley.

In a statement, Capello said: “After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry.

“As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

“What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice. John Terry was notified first.”

Speculation over who will take over the captain’s armband is now rife, with Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and even Frank Lampard being touted as possibles.

Meanwhile, the woman Terry is alleged to have had an affair with, French lingerie model and former wife of Wayne Bridge, Vanessa Perroncel, has said she will not be selling her story to the papers.

As a statement from Ms Perroncel was being read by her publicist Max Clifford, reports began emerging that Terry had lost the captain’s armband. She looked visibly shocked, shaking her head and mouthing: “Oh my God.”

Reacting to the news, Mr Clifford said: “Vanessa would also like to add that she finds it very sad that John Terry has been dropped as England captain.”

Bridge’s ex-girlfriend has been at the centre of a media storm following an alleged affair with the City defender’s former Chelsea and England team-mate John Terry. The revelations were revealed after a court order banning their publication was lifted.

The Players who wore the T-Shirts were named as Carlos Tevez, Stephen Ireland and Nigel de Jong,

“The players are very close to Wayne,” said Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini following the game. In his view it was a “It was a nice gesture.”

In a statement on Saturday, said he would not comment about the reports of the alleged affair. England international Bridge, 28, missed the 2-0 victory at The City of Manchester Stadium due to a knee injury.

“The reports deal with matters which are of a deeply personal and private nature,” he released via his  lawyers.

“My primary concern is the welfare of my son. Therefore, I intend to make no comment whatsoever either now or in the future about these reports and ask that my privacy is respected.”

Mancini added: “He is a fantastic player and a good guy.”

The controversy has led to many questioning whether Terry is a suitable man to lead England to the World Cup in South Africa this summer. Controversy seems to have followed him and his family in recent months, with many revelations casting a shadow over his captaincy. His father was alleged to have sold Drugs in a nightclub toilet whilst his mother was arrested for shoplifting. Meanwhile Terry himself was alleged to have sold tours around the Chelsea training ground in Cobham for substantial sums of money.

All of these errors in judgement have led many to question whether Terry is the right man to captain England and be a role model to many aspiring footballers. It is hoped that this does not cast a shadow upon England’s World Cup preparations.

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner could make his 1st start for  almost 3 months against Manchester United which will be a big boost to his team now that Eduardo is ruled out with a torn hamstring.

Sol Campbell is expected to replace Thomas Vermaelen who is ruled out with a broken leg, whilst Alex Song and Emmanuel Eboue are now available following the African Nations Cup.

Man United’s Rio Ferdinand begins his four-match ban, after failing in his appeal against a violent conduct charge following from his clash with Hull’s Craig Fagan.

Nemanja Vidic will be expected to replace  Rio Ferdinand following his recovery from injury.

Aston Villa are now entering a crucial stage of their season that could potentially “make or break” their challenge for a place in the Champions League  according to Martin O’Neill, their manager.

Villa are currently sitting pretty 4 points away from fourth spot and finish January with today’s visit to Craven Cottage before their season defining matches against Spurs and Manchester United at the beginning of February. The results in these matches, particularly the game against Spurs could shift the balance one way or another in the fight for 4th place.

Even though last week they reached their first Wembley final for a decade, Aston Villa’s Premier league form has dipped at an alarming rate. Although they performed relatively well in their previous game against Arsenal,  it Continued Villa’s cycle of 4 games win, during which time they have only picked up 2 points, not the form you would expect of champions league challengers. Even more importantly, they have not scored in any of their last 4 games, their attack really needs to return to form before it is too late.

Fulham have also suffered their own drastic dip in form. They have lost their last 4 matches and have gone 5 games without a victory since their 3-0 victory of Man Utd in December.

Roy Hodgson’s side however remain unbeaten at the fortress that is Craven Cottage since September and have not losta home game against Villa since February 2004.

Despite revenues going up, European football’s governing body UEFA is becoming increasingly concerned and will publish a report on the scale of the problem next month before bringing in new tougher regulations. 

These new rules will be part of UEFA’s club licensing regulations in 2012-13, meaning that from 2013-14 clubs must break even — only spending the money they generate — or risk facing exclusion from the Champions and Europa Leagues. 

The UEFA does not expect any major clubs to fold, but they are worried that if these financial problems are not dealt with now, they could spiral out of control.

 ”I would not paint such a cataclysmic picture of major clubs folding because football has always shown there can be solutions but having said that, we are seriously worried to see these trends. The clubs themselves are worried, the leagues are worried,” Infantino said. 

“These are the reasons that pushed us to take the decision to do something and what is healthier and what can bring a more sustainable model than saying you cannot actually spend more than the revenues that you generate. 

“One could say if a club goes bust ‘who cares?’. But we care. We care for that club and all the other clubs who would have problems because one club has gone and not paid them and then there is a spiral,” added Infantino. 

“We are doing this after very detailed research which we will publish next month. Our report has analysed 650 clubs all over Europe and it shows around 50 percent of those clubs are making losses every year — and 20 percent are making huge losses every year. 

“Huge losses mean more than 20 percent of their revenue. It also shows of these 650 clubs more than one-third are spending 70 percent or more of their income on salaries only — which is worrying,” said Infantino. 

“The other element, which is again worrying, is that last season revenues in European football generally went up by 10 percent which is very positive. But, on the other side, the increased costs have gone up 11.5 percent and player salaries have gone up 18 percent.”

Gibbs broke a bone in his left foot in a tackle with Eliaquim Manga of Belgian club Standard Liege during a Champions League match in November.

However, the fracture has failed to heal fully and Gibbs is now due to have a bone graft in order to help him make a complete recovery.

Gibbs, 20 years old, is expected to be sidelined for five months, ruling him out of the remainder of a season where Premier League leaders Arsenal are mounting an impressive challenge for the English title and ending Gibb’s hopes of being included in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

“Needless to say I’m gutted – there’s just no other word,” he said, “The other option to surgery would have been to wait and let the bone grow in my foot, but we didn’t want to do that because I’d have to wait another six weeks just to have another scan. I’d run the risk of it carrying on into next season, and we don’t want to do that.”

Left-back Gibbs added: “I’m now just looking to recover from the injury, work really hard and be ready for next season.”

Arsenal will cover left-back with French youngster Armand Traore, ready to come in if first-choice Gael Clichy is unavailable.
